During our afternoon rehearsal, he pulled it out of his backpack. It was on manuscript paper, because it had yet to be published. I remember having him play through it to teach me the melody, and I thought, "What a cool concept for a song." I cannot articulate the reason, the why, because it seems to change every time I hear it. I do know it is the tune I sang to Allie when her rage was uncontrollable, as I sat with her in my arms, restraining her, keeping her from harming herself, me or anyone else, and I sang. I sang my love. I sang that I would always be there for her. And after several stanzas, she would relax. She would dissolve into tears of sorrow, apology, regret.
